Steel Plate Rolling Machine Case: Wind Tower Fabricator Rolls 42 mm Plate with CNC Control

Steel Plate Rolling Machine Case: Wind Tower Fabricator Rolls 42 mm Plate with CNC Control

2026-08-12

Client Background

The client is a wind tower and heavy steel structure fabricator in South Asia producing tower sections, transition pieces and large storage tanks. The workshop handles plate from 8 mm to 42 mm in width up to 3,200 mm, with material grades including S355 and higher-strength structural steel.

The Challenge

Shell rolling was performed on an older three-roll machine operated purely by experience. As tower diameters and plate thicknesses increased, the limits became obvious:

  • Rolling time per shell reached six hours, with repeated trial passes to correct diameter drift.
  • Roundness deviation up to 12 mm forced extra fit-up labour and weld rework at the longitudinal seam.
  • Plate slippage and marking on thicker plate damaged the surface and required grinding before painting.
  • Operator dependency meant output dropped whenever the senior roller was absent.

Machine Specification

Parameter Delivered Configuration
Type Four-roll CNC plate rolling machine
Maximum plate thickness 42 mm (pre-bending 36 mm)
Rolling width 3,200 mm
Top roll diameter 760 mm, hardened and ground
Control CNC with stored recipes, diameter and roundness compensation
Auxiliary Hydraulic drop-end, support rolls, cone rolling attachment

Implementation

The machine was installed in a purpose-built pit over three weeks, with foundation and hydraulic commissioning completed before production trials began. Our engineers worked with the client's welding supervisors to build a recipe library covering each standard tower diameter, so the operator now enters plate grade, thickness and target diameter and the controller positions the rolls accordingly. Roundness measurements were recorded on the first twelve shells and compared against the drawing tolerance to fine-tune the compensation values.

Results After Four Months

Metric Previous Machine New CNC Machine
Rolling time per shell 6.0 hours 3.7 hours
Roundness deviation Up to 12 mm ≤3 mm
Seam fit-up rework Frequent Occasional
Surface rework (grinding) Routine on thick plate Minimal
Operators able to run the machine 1 4

Client Feedback

"The recipe library is the real value. New operators produce the same shell quality as our most experienced roller within a week," the fabrication manager said. The fabricator has since taken on additional tower contracts without expanding the rolling bay footprint.

Key Takeaway

In heavy fabrication, plate rolling accuracy propagates through every downstream operation. A CNC four-roll machine with stored recipes and support rolls converts an experience-dependent craft into a repeatable process, reducing rolling hours, weld rework and dependence on individual operators. For fabricators bidding on tower and tank projects, documented roundness data now supports qualification with end customers as well.
